Guide to Bosch GLM Laser Measures

Bosch is a global company known for its wide range of products that include automotive parts, power tools, electronics, engineering equipment, security systems, home appliances, and many others. This article tackles the company’s laser measure tools and some of their most popular models.

A laser tape measure is a high-tech alternative to the traditional metric steel tapes. It sends a pulse of laser light to its targeted location and measures the time it takes for the light’s reflection to return.

Typical laser tape measures are used to calculate lengths, widths, and heights of up to around 650 feet (or 198 meters). They are generally considered accurate to within 3 millimeters for distances up to 300 feet (or 91.5 meters). But then, it still depends on the brand or the model. The built-in processing allows laser tape measures to add, subtract, calculate volumes and areas, and triangulate.

Compared to the good old metric steel tapes, the laser tape measure wins in almost every aspect – speed, accuracy, versatility, convenience, ease of use, functionality, and safety.

How to use a laser tape measure?

Using a laser tape measure is pretty simple and straightforward. Place the device (or hold it up) on one end of what you are going to measure. Press the power button to turn the device on. Then direct the laser beam towards the target object; as you can see, the laser beam hits the target object at the other end.

In case there is no target object like a wall or a pole, you can place a target object at the spot you want to measure up to. The process of measuring is similar to measuring with a conventional metric steel tape, except that you use a laser beam.

Once the laser beam hits the desired spot, press the button. Then the device calculates the distance using the time-of-flight method, wherein the time it takes for the optical pulse to reflect back to the device is measured and calculated.

One of the most significant advantages of using a laser tape measure is that the line is straight. You don’t encounter any bending or sagging, which is a problem in most conventional measuring tools. As a result, the risk of misreading is considerably minimized or even eliminated. Instead, you will get the most precise and exact measurements you’ve ever seen.
