Accessories to Keep Your Swiss Army Knife in Top Shape

Owning an original Swiss Army knife – or a collection of them – is one of the proudest thing for a knife enthusiast or an outdoorsman. No matter what your hobby is, there’s just a satisfying feeling when you whip out your pocket knife out of your pocket and you begin slicing and peeling and removing screws and wine corks and whatnot. It makes you proud of yourself – being equipped for anything, and being able to impresses your peers with your readiness.

The perks of having a Swiss Army knife are many, but you must know how to maintain your knife to keep it in top shape. Here are some of the accessories you can consider having and maintenance essentials to have to keep your Swiss Army knife looking good as new for a long time:

Cleaning tools

All your Swiss army knife tools need a good cleaning. If you have compressed air, it’s a great thing to have on hand. But if you don’t, all you need are these things:

  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Cotton swabs
  • Rags
  • Eraser

Isopropyl alcohol is a cheap and effective cleaner for steel parts and it’s safe to use on skin. Apply it to the rags than rub the flat parts with it. For those hard-to-reach parts, you can use cotton swabs. For the rags, you can use any cloth that you don’t care much about, because you can also use it when lubricating the knife. Old socks, T-shirts and other old pieces of garment are great to use. The eraser can be used if there’s any discoloration or unwanted patina in your blades. A dab of mineral oil rubbed to the blade with a regular pencil eraser seems to remove even the most stubborn spotting and staining.

Since you can’t clean up all the random junk in your knife, you can run it under hot tap water. But it’s best if you can let the knife soak in a cleaning solvent like isopropyl alcohol for at least half hour until the hard-to-reach gunk are removed. Don’t soak it for more than 12 hours, as it can rust the knife faster. Use lubricating oils after cleaning to prevent rust and keep the tools it shiny.

Before soaking, remove all the removable parts. If your Swiss army knife have a USB stick or pen – these are the most important things to remove. You don’t want to soak up these items.

Oil is absolutely necessary for keeping a Swiss Army knife in its optimal condition. If you plan to clean your knife, also oil it after. Without oil, knife will be hard to open and may rust quickly. These are some of the best lubricants to use for your Swiss army knives:
